A FAMOSA, MELAKA
One of the oldest surviving European fortifications in Southeast Asia
Overview
A Famosa is a historic Portuguese fortress located in Melaka, Malaysia, and is one of the
most important surviving European architectural remains in Southeast Asia.
Built in 1511 by the Portuguese after they conquered Melaka, the fortress originally
served as a strong defensive structure to protect their colonial settlement.
Today, only a small gatehouse known as Porta de Santiago remains, but it continues to
stand as a powerful symbol of Melaka’s colonial history and strategic importance.
The site is located near St. Paul’s Hill and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Melaka City.
