CHRIST CHURCH MELAKA, MELAKA
Iconic red colonial church and one of the most recognisable landmarks in Melaka’s UNESCO World Heritage Site
Overview
Christ Church Melaka is one of the oldest functioning Protestant churches in Malaysia
and a major landmark in the historic city of Melaka.
Built between 1741 and 1753 during the Dutch colonial period, the church was originally
constructed to commemorate the centenary of Dutch control over Melaka.
The building is famous for its distinctive red exterior, made using laterite stones
and red paint, which has become a defining symbol of Dutch-era architecture in the region.
Today, Christ Church continues to function as an active place of worship while also serving as one of
the most visited tourist attractions in the UNESCO World Heritage zone.
