Penang Botanic Gardens

PENANG BOTANIC GARDENS, PENANG

A lush tropical sanctuary featuring rainforest trails, waterfalls, and diverse plant collections in a historic garden setting

Overview

Penang Botanic Gardens, also known locally as the “Waterfall Gardens,” is one of Penang’s oldest and most beautiful natural attractions. Established in 1884 by British colonial botanists, the gardens were originally created as a research and conservation site for tropical plant species.

Located at the foothills of Penang Hill, the gardens cover a large valley surrounded by rainforest-covered hills, creating a cool and refreshing environment despite Penang’s tropical climate.

Today, the gardens serve both as a recreational park and an important botanical research site, attracting joggers, nature lovers, families, and tourists seeking a peaceful escape from George Town.

The gardens are also home to monkeys, butterflies, exotic plants, and shaded walking trails that lead through scenic landscapes and small streams.
