CHEW JETTY, PENANG
One of the most famous clan jetties in George Town, showcasing traditional waterfront stilt houses and heritage culture
Overview
Chew Jetty is one of the most well-known clan jetties in George Town, Penang, located along the waterfront of Weld Quay. It is part of the historic Clan Jetties of Penang, a UNESCO World Heritage site buffer zone area.
Established in the late 19th century by Chinese immigrants of the Chew clan, the jetty consists of wooden houses built on stilts over the sea. The settlement reflects the early waterfront communities that played an important role in Penang’s port history.
Today, Chew Jetty remains a living heritage village where residents continue their daily lives while also welcoming visitors who come to explore its narrow wooden walkways, small shops, and cultural atmosphere.
The jetty is one of the most photographed heritage sites in Penang, especially popular during sunset when the wooden walkways and sea views create a scenic backdrop.
