Overview
Danum Valley Conservation Area is one of Malaysia's most important protected rainforests,
located in eastern Sabah near Lahad Datu.
Covering approximately 438 square kilometres, the reserve protects one of the largest
remaining areas of untouched lowland dipterocarp rainforest in Southeast Asia.
The forest is estimated to be over 130 million years old and serves as a sanctuary for
numerous endangered species including orangutans, pygmy elephants, clouded leopards, gibbons, hornbills,
and hundreds of bird species.
Danum Valley is internationally recognised as a leading centre for tropical rainforest research,
biodiversity conservation, ecotourism, and wildlife photography.
